What’s the difference between a swimming pool and an alberca?
When summer arrives, having a swimming pool or an alberca at home nearby is a great way to beat the heat. A refreshing dip in either of these two places will make us feel more energized. But could you tell the difference between a swimming pool and an alberca? In some places in South America they mean the same thing, although in Spain we use them to refer to facilities with different purposes. At Innowater, experts in saltwater electrolysis solutions, we’ll clear up all your questions about it.

Definition according to the RAE
When questions like this come up, there’s nothing better than turning to language experts. In this case, the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) can help us understand what a piscina really is and how it differs from an alberca. The RAE says the following:
Alberca: “Artificial water reservoir, with masonry walls, for irrigation.”
Piscina: “A structure that holds a large amount of water and is intended for bathing, swimming, or other water-based exercises and sports.”
So, if we focus on these definitions, it’s very easy to tell a piscina from an alberca, mainly because of the purpose of each. An alberca is a reservoir for irrigating crops, while a piscina has a more recreational purpose, allowing us to exercise by swimming or simply have fun in the water.
Technical differences
There are also major differences when it comes to the type of installation. In a swimming pool, you need to install a water cleaning and disinfection system, such as the saltwater electrolysis solutions we offer at Innowater. Maximum enjoyment for users must be ensured, so it’s necessary to use chlorinators and pH control mechanisms, which will prevent algae or fungi from appearing.
On the other hand, in albercas it isn’t necessary to have all these systems to ensure water quality. This type of hydraulic structure is excavated in the ground and built with brick or masonry. The water stays clean inside because, since it’s used for irrigation, it’s constantly renewed.
From a language standpoint, in Central American countries such as Mexico, an alberca is the same as a swimming pool. As a result, in that country the word alberca has become widely used to refer to that idyllic place to go for a swim. In addition, there are also some places in Spain, such as Castilla-La Mancha, where the term alberca is used to refer to swimming pools.
For proper maintenance: saltwater electrolysis
No matter what we call it, proper water maintenance is essential if we want to fully enjoy our swimming pool or alberca.
Saltwater electrolysis is one of the best options available, and it’s what we recommend at Innowater. It’s a much more affordable and eco-friendly option than traditional chlorine!

Salt chlorination for pools is a treatment system that generates pure chlorine from the salt dissolved in the water, through an electrolysis process. A sustainable, automated, and safe treatment for swimming.
